Microsoft 365 AI Security Setup

By George Hayner

Microsoft 365 now includes AI features that touch email, files, and daily workflows. For Charlotte businesses, the difference between useful adoption and added risk comes down to one decision: what data the AI is allowed to access.

Start with visibility controls

Most attacks today target Microsoft 365 accounts through phishing or stolen credentials. AI threat detection can spot unusual sign-ins and mailbox rules faster than manual review, but only when the environment is configured to limit exposure. The same principle applies to new AI capabilities: they are only safe when you decide exactly what they can see.

Begin by reviewing permissions and data boundaries before enabling any new features. This prevents sensitive information from leaving your tenant and reduces the chance that an AI-assisted workflow creates unintended access.

  • Map which mailboxes and SharePoint sites contain regulated or confidential data first.
  • Apply conditional access rules that require multi-factor authentication (MFA) for any AI-related activity.
  • Test features in a small pilot group before wider rollout.
  • Review logs regularly to confirm the AI is only acting on approved data sets.
